Harry is in his 23rd year as a Counselor and Professor
at Pasadena City College. He has been a faculty activist
on his campus, having served two terms as Academic Senate
President, as well as on the Executive Committee of the
State Academic Senate.
He has been an active leader with CCA for several years,
serving as District G Director and Racial/Ethnic Minority
Director. He currently serves as Co-chair of the Legislative
and Political Action Committee.
Harry puts in many hours of volunteer time because he believes
that “CCA vigorously advocates for faculty salaries
and improved working condition.” As he thinks about
retirement, he is very grateful for the strategic part CTA/CCA
played in having key retirement legislation pass in Sacramento. |

From: Roger Marheine (Lead Negotiator - PCC/CCA)
Date: January 24, 2002
The Advisory Board of the PCC/CCA believes that we are about
to embark on a new era of negoatiations with PCC administration
that will be of great benefit the the college. It is truly
an auspicious moment in our collegial history. The PCC/CCA
Advisory Board pleadges to be a model of integrity and excellence
as we seek to establish a meaningful dialogue with all campus
constituencies. We have changed the shape and substance of
our union, and now we promise to bring vision and vigor to
the negotiating process. We will address only the most principled
proposals and conduct our affairs in the most open and democratic
manner. Every proposal, every decision, and every initiative
will be made in the best interests of the college, to promote
the greatest educational opportunities and to insure the freatest
student success. We are the faculty. We teach. We create the
vision and set the bar. Over two-thirds of PCC's 30,000 students
come from all over greater Los Angeles because of us. PCC
is a showcase of educational excellence.
The Advisory Board is made up pf the newly elected PCC/CCA
Board, the Negotiating Team, and representatives from the
Divisions. We have been meeting at least twice a week since
November. We have reviewed your issues and concerns as stated
in the faculty survey conducted late last year during the
elections. We have created a website (www.profaculty.com).
We have been consulting with state CCA representatives, Lisa
Adams, Alen Frey, and Rocky Barilla who are here with us today.
We have prepared diligently for the negotiations with administration.
We have arrivesd at a concensus. The previous negotiations
failed, and regrettably, the administration imposed a settlement
that we find unacceptable. Our goal is to first address the
current fiscal year (July 1,2001 to June 30, 2002 ). We seek
a speedy and satisfactory completion of negotiations. Thus,
we have informed the administration that we will put forward
three very reasonable proposals for negotiations that will
address issues of the three major constituencies -- full time
faculty, part-time faculty, and non-credit faculty, most of
whom teach at the CEC. We hope that negotiations will have
been successfully completed within a very short period (in
February). We have also informed administration that until
we arrive at a successful completion of negotiations, we can
not turn our attention to the upcoming elections that involve
the college's bond measure. The priority must first be on
faculty's most immediate concerns, and we are confident that
good faith bargaining will achieve positive results.
We need your help for a variety of tasks! Call John Jacobs
(7621), Tom Berg (7186) or Roger Marheine (7421).
